pH = hydrogen potential.
The pH scale measures the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a substance. It goes from zero to 14. Zero means total acidity – so acidic that it could make a hole in the steel. A pH between zero and 6.99 is acid; 7 means neutral and 14 means total alkalinity. So the lower the figure the higher the degree of acidity, the higher, the higher alkalinity. The pH scale is not arithmetic, but logarithmic. This means that a result of 5, for example, is not just a little more acidic than a 6, but ten times more acidic and 100 times more acidic than a pH of 7. And a 9 is 1,000 times more alkaline than a pH of 6.
What does all this have to do with your health?
Well, your body works optimally when the pH of your blood and other bodily fluids of your body is between 7.37 and 7.39. Your body will do everything it can to keep it in this range but sometimes at the expense of your health in the medium and long term. The ideal level varies from one organ to another. For example, due to gastric juices, the pH of our stomach will be more acidic (between 1 and 3) than the pH of our blood and in the pancreas a pH between 8.0 and 8.3 will probably be recorded.
What interests you for your future health is that the pH of your basic interior soil is always slightly alkaline. (Between 7.35 and 7.39). Any pH below these figures indicates a state of “acidosis,” that is, an abnormal state of an excess of acids in the tissues. If your urine has a pH of 5, for example, this means that you have 100 times more acidification in the body than you should have. Rarely is an “alkalosis” seen. It is much more likely that you and I are too “acidic” inside.
This acidification causes all kinds of stress in the body and is directly or indirectly related to the following discomforts and diseases:
Lack of energy, fatigue, poor circulation, overweight or lack of weight, irritability, nervousness, inflammation, gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, cancer, gallstones or kidney stones, allergies, eczema, psoriasis, osteoporosis, arthritis, gout, to name a few. On the other hand, when the internal biochemical environment of our body registers a slightly alkaline pH, we not only prevent or get rid of many discomforts and diseases, we not only balance our weight, we not only avoid the need to medicate ourselves, but also give us the possibility of experiencing a huge increase in energy and vitality and keeping us younger longer. Imagine the possibilities!
Where there is more acidity there is less oxygen and cell mutation is more likely to occur. So we can conclude that if we keep our cells well oxygenated, we increase the likelihood of hindering carcinogenic processes in our body.
