A Chef on the Importance of an Alkaline Diet

“You can always eat healthier in an affordable way. Health is forged day by day, and a day of exception, every so often, will not change anything. It also happens the other way around. ”

Quim Muns, a renowned chef and expert in nutrition combines his culinary background with a passion for healthy, conscious eating. Muns was trained by Joan Roca of Celler de Can Roca, which has earned 3 Michelin stars. His work and knowledge has lead him become an advocate for promoting alkaline health. Quim believes the alkaline diet is one of the most effective ways to enhance vitality and prevent chronic diseases.

What inspired you?

My own experiences with improving health through an alkaline diet sparked this journey. I realized we live in an acidic world, and I wanted to help balance that, and to offer knowledge to live a healthier life.

Can you eat healthy and still stay on budget?

Absolutely! You can eat healthy without breaking the bank. Health is a daily practice—one day of indulgence won’t derail you, and a single healthy choice won’t save you. The key is to enjoy your meals. Cook simple, wholesome foods, and aim for balance. Half of what you eat should be alkalizing foods, and when you do include acidic ones, make sure they’re nutrient-dense and high-quality.

Can you elaborate on your thoughts about meat quality?

Yes, stress at slaughter is a huge factor in meat quality. Stress increases acidity in animals, which affects the pH of their meat. That’s why some slaughterhouses let animals rest before processing to ensure better quality meat.

Why is your food your medicine?

Starting your day with high-quality, nutrient-dense food sets you up for success. By the end of the day, we often face stress, which increases acidity. Having an alkaline reserve from your diet can help offset this and keep you feeling well. A simple glass of alkaline water with lemon in the morning can do wonders.

What are your top tips for busy people?

  1. Drink at least 2 liters of quality water a day, with a glass of alkaline water in the morning.
  2. Include vegetables in every meal—salads or green juices are great!
  3. Stay active—move, walk, dance, or play. Life is movement.
  4. Manage stress—chronic stress can acidify your body. Remember, stress is often a result of our thoughts.
  5. Spend time outdoors—nature and fresh air are healing.

Should more chefs study nutrition?

Absolutely! When chefs understand nutrition, they can create dishes that respect the body’s needs, not just the taste buds. Combining culinary skills with nutritional knowledge leads to better, healthier food. However, this awareness can limit certain cooking - like using white rice instead of brown, which might be a better choice for health.

What’s your take on the Alkanatur pitcher?

Drinking alkaline water is crucial for maintaining a balanced pH, especially since our bodies are 70% water. Hydration with high-quality water supports overall health. I use the Alkanatur pitcher to make soups, broths, and to soak vegetables before cooking. It’s an easy, affordable way to access antioxidant-rich alkaline water.

It’s all about making small, consistent changes—health doesn’t need to be complicated, just thoughtful.
